Exciting Growth and a World of Innovation: Inside Life on Our Tech Team (Part 2)

Tuesday, 17th May 2022

Working at a fast scaling company is inspiring because as our teams grow, so do our capabilities!

In Part 1, we heard from our Software Engineering team. This time, we dive into the world of Data Science where more people on board means the ability to take on bigger challenges, set up interesting experiments and find intelligent solutions that make our customers’ lives easier and the planet healthier.

Find out more about the exciting projects our Data Science team are working on and what they love most about Infogrid below.

Amy, Associate Data Scientist

The best thing about working at Infogrid is undoubtedly the people. Everyone is friendly, ready to help and great at what they do. The senior leadership is also very accessible and there’s a real sense that we’re in this together and pulling forward as a team alongside the senior leadership, without that separation from leadership you get at some companies.

I'm currently working on the next generation of our desk occupancy solution, a product I've seen mature during my time at Infogrid. I've had to collect control data, which means setting up experiments in our own offices and at peoples’ homes, then use it to train new machine learning models. The best thing is seeing our solution in action and satisfied clients!

Sam, Data Scientist

Normally as a data scientist you're just given data, and told to make something work with it, but at Infogrid, you get to look at the entire problem. A favourite project of mine has been working with a customer on a challenge they were having performing monthly tests on emergency lights in their buildings. As it stood, they needed someone to drive to each site to manually check the switches. We came up with a more efficient and easier process by doing a bunch of tests validating that we could solve the solution, collecting data to build a model with, and testing a lot of hardware.

I've worked at a lot of companies that make claims about having a great culture, but few actually follow through like Infogrid. One of the best bits is that we are forever learning. We get one day per month for personal development, on whatever we want to learn more about. For me, it’s usually getting up to speed with the latest and greatest Computer Vision papers.

Aidan, Head of Data Science

I'd say every project we work on has gotten more exciting and interesting over time, because as the team grows and matures, our capabilities increase.

We are currently working on a project to offer automated insights to customers based on their data. The concept is to reduce the amount of time required for users to peruse their data - akin to using a search engine instead of a library to find information. We’re doing this by automatically highlighting interesting features. Effectively, it’s AI – replacing the need for human effort. The time saved makes the user substantially more productive, which is what makes it such an interesting and appealing project for me. This is the kind of thing I went into data science for in the first place.

As Head of Data Science, I really appreciate how incredibly competent and capable everyone is,  both in a team setting and individually. I never need to monitor work. It’s great working with that level of trust.

We’re growing fast and our tech team is at the heart of it, working with the latest technology to create innovative, tech-driven solutions for our customers. Sound like something you want to be part of? Check out our careers page for all our open roles!
